Morocco faces the Atlantic for almost its entire western edge, and the surf changes completely along it. These are the places worth knowing, what each is actually good at, and who is listing there.

Choosing a stretch of coast

The centre of it all is the run between Agadir and Imsouane — Taghazout, Tamraght and the right-hand points around them. This is where the surf camps, the instructors, the board hire and the airport transfers are, and it is the obvious choice for a first trip or for anyone who wants a week arranged rather than improvised. The price is company: in January and February the points are busy.

North of that, Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki trade wave quality for wind and for a town worth being in. From spring to autumn the afternoon wind makes this the best kitesurfing and windsurfing coast in the country and the most awkward place to learn to surf; in winter it reverses. Casablanca, Rabat and Mehdia are city surfing — local line-ups, consistent beach breaks, everything open all year and no surf-camp scene at all.

South of Agadir the infrastructure thins out and the coast opens up. Mirleft and Sidi Ifni are for travellers with transport who are happy to look for waves rather than be driven to them. Safi is different again: one of the best right-handers in Africa, unridable most of the year, and worth a trip only on a forecast. If it is your first week in Morocco, start in the middle and go south later.
