How to Read a Morocco Surf Forecast (Beginner-Friendly)

Ten minutes understanding a forecast tells you more about your surf trip than any brochure. There are only four numbers that matter.

Wave height is the least useful number

Forecast height describes open-ocean swell, not the wave breaking in front of you. A one-metre reading can produce anything from a knee-high ripple to an overhead wall depending on the other three numbers.

For learning, 0.7 to 1.3 metres is the useful band. Above two metres, the beginner bays start closing out and lessons move or shorten.

Period is the number that matters

Period is the gap in seconds between waves, and it measures energy. Seven or eight seconds is locally generated wind chop: weak, disorganised, hard to catch. Fourteen seconds or more is groundswell that has crossed the Atlantic from a distant storm, carrying enormous energy.

This is why a 1.5-metre day at sixteen seconds can be too much for a beginner while a 1.5-metre day at eight seconds is perfectly pleasant. Same height, completely different ocean.

Direction decides where you surf

Northwest swell lights up the right-hand points along this coast. West and southwest energy favours the open beaches. A good camp reads direction each morning and drives accordingly instead of going to the same car park daily.

Wind decides the quality

Under 15 km/h and offshore is clean. Strong onshore wind turns a good swell into unrideable chop within an hour. On this coast the pattern is reliable: light or offshore at dawn, building onshore through the afternoon. That is why lessons start early.

The combination to avoid

Large height and long period together. Two metres at sixteen seconds moves serious energy, and even sheltered bays will surge and rip. If you see that in your week, expect the schedule to change — and be glad it did.

Reading a forecast for a whole week, not a day

Single-day forecasts are reliable. Week-long forecasts are a shape rather than a promise, and the useful skill is reading the shape.

Look for the trend in period rather than height. A run of days where the period climbs from 8 to 13 seconds means a groundswell is arriving and the points will start working, even if the height numbers look similar. A period falling back into single figures means the swell is local wind chop and the beaches will be better than the points.

Wind is the least reliable element beyond three days and the one that most often changes a plan. Treat any wind forecast further out than 72 hours as a rough indication.

Why two forecast sites disagree

Different models. Most surf sites run one of a small number of global wave models and apply their own local adjustment, so the same buoy data produces different numbers depending on whose interpretation you are reading.

The practical response is to read two and take the shape they agree on rather than the numbers either gives. If both show a rising period midweek, that is real. If one says 1.4 m and the other 1.8 m, the difference matters far less than the direction of travel.

Nothing beats a local looking at the water. This is not sentimentality — a camp that has surfed the same twenty kilometres for years knows which bank is working after the last storm, and no model contains that.

Tides, and how to use a tide table

The Atlantic tidal range here runs to two metres or more, and it moves roughly fifty minutes later each day. That means a spot that was perfect at nine this morning is perfect at ten tomorrow, which is why lesson times shift through a week rather than staying fixed.

For beach breaks, mid tide on the push is generally the safest bet — enough water to stop the wave dumping, enough movement to keep it breaking. For rocky points, more water is usually better for anyone still learning, because it covers the bottom.

What the numbers cannot tell you

Crowd, which can ruin an objectively perfect forecast. Water clarity after rain. Whether the banks have shifted. Whether the wind that reads as five knots is actually funnelling down a valley onto one specific beach.

Forecasting gets you to roughly the right place at roughly the right time. The last twenty percent is looking at the water, and it is the part worth learning.

Matching the forecast to the spot

A forecast is only useful once you know which spot it favours. On this coast the rough rules are consistent enough to plan by.

Small swell, short period: the exposed beach breaks. Tamri picks up the most, and a day that looks flat everywhere else can be waist-high and clean there.

Medium northwest swell: the sandy bays and the smaller points. This is the sweet spot for most of a learning week.

Large northwest groundswell: the points wake up and the beaches close out. Anchor, Killers and Boilers are for experienced surfers on these days, and beginners move to whichever bay is most sheltered.

Westerly or southwesterly swell: the open beaches do better than the north-facing points, because the energy arrives at the wrong angle to wrap.

A worked example of a real week

Monday: 1.0 m at 9 seconds, light east wind. Beginner bays, two sessions, clean conditions.

Tuesday: 1.1 m at 10 seconds. Same again, slightly more push, first green waves for the group.

Wednesday: 1.8 m at 14 seconds arriving overnight, easterly offshore. The points switch on. Beginners move to the most sheltered bay for a shorter session; anyone competent goes to a point.

Thursday: 2.3 m at 15 seconds. Too big for the bays. Morning at an exposed but manageable beach, afternoon spent watching Anchor from the headland, which is a better use of the day than an unsafe session.

Friday: 1.6 m at 13 seconds, easing. The best all-round day of the week for improvers.

That week happens regularly between November and February, and a camp that reads it correctly gives you five good days out of five.

Apps and sources worth having

Any of the major surf forecasting services will do; what matters is using two and reading the agreement rather than trusting one. Add a tide table for Agadir, and a general weather app for wind, which the surf services sometimes smooth.

Buoy data is the ground truth where available, because it reports what is actually in the water rather than what a model predicts.

And use your eyes. Twenty minutes on a headland with a coffee, watching where waves break and how often sets arrive, will teach you more than a season of reading numbers.

Building the habit

Check the forecast every morning of your trip even if somebody else is making the decision. Look at the four numbers, form an opinion about where you would go, and then see where your instructor actually takes you.

Doing that for six days teaches you more than any article can, because you get immediate feedback on your reasoning from somebody who knows the coast. Ask why they chose that beach. Good coaches enjoy the question.

By the end of a week you will be able to look at a forecast and predict, roughly, whether the points will be working, whether the bays will be surfable, and whether the afternoon session will be worth doing. That is a skill that transfers to every coastline you ever surf.
