Overview
Every three-day desert tour has the same flaw: you arrive at the dunes in the evening and leave the next morning. This version adds a full day and a second night, which turns the Sahara from a photograph into a place.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Agadir → Taroudant → Taliouine → Ouarzazate
The southern route east: Taroudant's ramparts, then the climb into the Anti-Atlas to Taliouine, Morocco's saffron capital, where the crocus is picked at dawn through late October and November. Tazenakht for its Ouzguita carpets, then high plateau to Ouarzazate.
Night in a hotel with dinner. The air changes on this drive — you can feel the humidity leave somewhere around Taliouine.
Day 2 — Ouarzazate → Dades → Todra → Erg Chebbi
The Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Dades gorges and their Monkey Finger rock formations, then the Todra gorge at Tinghir with its palm oasis and vertical limestone walls.
East into emptier country, past Erfoud, to the edge of the erg. Camels in for sunset, camp in the dunes, tagine and drumming, and the first night under a sky that does not have a single artificial light in it.
Day 3 — A full day in the Sahara
This is the day that justifies the trip. Sunrise from the crest, breakfast, and then no long drive at all.
We take a 4x4 out across the erg and its edges. Khamlia, a village founded by descendants of people brought north across the Sahara, where the Gnawa musical tradition is still played daily — this is not a performance staged for coaches, it is a living practice, and hearing it in the room it belongs to is nothing like hearing a recording.
Rissani, whose market is one of the oldest trading posts in southern Morocco and still the place the region buys and sells. We eat medfouna there, the stuffed flatbread baked in sand that gets called Berber pizza on menus and is considerably better than that name suggests.
Erfoud for the fossil workshops. The rock in this region is dense with trilobites and ammonites from a period when all of this was seabed, and the workshops cut and polish it into slabs. It is a strange, excellent reminder that the Sahara is young and the ocean is older.
If the season has been wet, Dayet Srji holds water and flamingos arrive — an improbable sight beside a dune sea. We also stop for tea with a nomad family living out in the hammada, which happens only where the guide has a genuine relationship, not by turning up.
Back to camp for a second sunset, a second dinner and a second night. Everybody sleeps better than they did on the first.
Day 4 — Sunrise → Aït Ben Haddou → Marrakech
Final sunrise on the erg, breakfast, then west to Aït Ben Haddou — the fortified earthen ksar above the Ounila river, UNESCO-listed and still partly lived in. Climb to the granary at the top for the view.
Over the Tizi n'Tichka at 2,260 metres and down through walnut terraces into Marrakech in the late afternoon.

FAQ
Is the extra day worth €80?
If the desert is why you are coming, yes, and it is the single best upgrade on this page. On a three-day tour you arrive at dusk and leave at dawn. On this one you spend an entire day out there, meet people who live in it, and get a second night — which is when most people finally stop taking photographs and just look.
What is Gnawa music?
A spiritual musical tradition carried north across the Sahara centuries ago, built on the guembri lute, metal qraqeb castanets and call-and-response singing. Khamlia is one of the places it is still played as a living practice rather than a show.
Will the flamingos be there?
Only if Dayet Srji has water, which depends entirely on the season and the rainfall. Some years it is a lake with flamingos on it and some years it is a dry pan. We will not promise it.
Can I do the full-day version but return to Agadir?
Yes, though it becomes a five-day trip because of the return drive. Tell us your flight airport and we will build the version that fits.
