Sahara Stargazing on a Surf Trip: Timing Moon and Swell

You are paying for one night under one of the darkest skies in the northern hemisphere. Which night you choose changes what you see more than which camp you book — and on a surf trip there is a second calendar to fit it around.

Pick the flat spell, not the swell

On a two-week trip the desert night is the easiest thing to move and the surf is not. Look at the forecast a week ahead, find the two or three days when the swell drops away or the wind turns onshore all day, and put the drive inland there. Nobody has ever regretted missing a flat Tuesday.

The two calendars cooperate more often than you would expect. Autumn and spring bring the cleanest groundswell to this coast and also the clearest desert air, and the summer flat spells that frustrate surfers are the same weeks the Milky Way sits highest after dark.

The one combination to avoid is a full moon during a good swell. That trades waves for a washed-out sky, which is the worst deal on offer.

The moon decides everything

A full moon in a cloudless desert is astonishingly bright — bright enough to read by and to walk the dunes without a torch, and bright enough to wash out all but the strongest stars.

A new moon does the opposite. The sky fills in completely, and from roughly spring through early autumn the bright core of the Milky Way becomes plainly visible to the naked eye.

Both are worth seeing. They are simply not the same experience, and almost nobody checks before booking.

Which to choose

New moon or the few days either side if the sky is the reason you are going. A crescent is the strongest compromise: a lit sliver low on the horizon and still a dense star field. Half moon suits anyone travelling with children or nervous in the dark. Full moon is for silver landscapes and midnight dune walks.

Letting your eyes adjust

Twenty full minutes away from the fire, and no phone screen. Most people judge the sky after two minutes, decide it is nice, and go back to the drums. The difference between two minutes and twenty is the difference between a good sky and one you remember for a decade.

A head torch with a red mode preserves your night vision. An ordinary white torch destroys it instantly for everyone nearby.

Photography that actually works

A small phone tripod costs very little and turns a ten-second exposure into a usable photograph. Most modern phones have a night mode that will do a creditable job of the Milky Way if the phone is genuinely still.

Include a dune ridge or a tent in the frame for scale. A photograph of only stars looks like every other photograph of only stars.

What you can actually see, by season

From roughly February to October the bright core of the Milky Way is visible from the Sahara, though when it appears changes through the season: pre-dawn in late winter, the middle of the night in spring, and the early evening by late summer.

In winter the core is below the horizon, but the winter sky compensates — Orion is spectacular at this latitude, sitting far higher than northern European observers ever see it, and the Pleiades are naked-eye obvious.

Planets are the reliable pleasure. Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn are all bright enough to be unmistakable, and Jupiter's four largest moons are visible in ordinary binoculars, which surprises almost everybody who tries it.

Why the Sahara sky is exceptional

Three things stack. Almost no artificial light for hundreds of kilometres. Very low humidity, which means less scattering, so faint objects stay faint rather than being washed into the background. And altitude — Merzouga sits at around 900 metres, which removes a useful slice of atmosphere.

The result is a sky where the Milky Way casts a faint shadow on white sand on a moonless night. Most people have never seen this and do not believe it until they are standing in it.

Photographing it with what you have

A phone from the last few years with a night mode will produce a genuinely good Milky Way photograph if — and only if — the phone is completely still. A €10 tripod is the difference between a usable image and a smear.

On a camera, the starting point is the widest aperture your lens allows, ISO 3200, and a shutter around 15 to 20 seconds. Longer than that and stars begin to trail. Focus manually on a bright star rather than trusting autofocus in the dark.

Compose with something in the foreground. A dune ridge, a tent, a person with a torch. A frame of only stars looks identical to every other frame of only stars.

Take a spare battery. Cold drains them faster than you expect, and long exposures drain them faster still.

Doing it properly on the night

Twenty full minutes away from the fire and off your phone. Night vision takes that long to develop and one glance at a white screen resets it completely. Use a red-mode torch, and ask the group to do the same.

Lie down rather than standing. You see far more of the sky and you stop craning your neck after two minutes.

Download a star chart app before you travel, since there is no signal out there. Being able to name three things you are looking at changes the experience from pretty to interesting.

What to look for with the naked eye

The Milky Way itself, in season, running from horizon to horizon as a textured band rather than a smudge. On a moonless night you can see structure in it — the dark dust lanes that cut through the bright core.

The Andromeda galaxy, visible as a faint oval in autumn and winter, and the furthest thing most people ever see unaided at 2.5 million light years.

The Pleiades, a tight cluster that reveals six or seven stars to the naked eye and dozens in binoculars.

Satellites, which cross the sky constantly once you start noticing them, and the International Space Station, which is unmistakably bright and moves fast.

And meteors. On any dark night you will see several an hour without a shower in progress.

Timing your trip to a meteor shower

Several annual showers are worth building dates around if the sky is your priority. The Perseids peak in mid-August, which collides with the hottest and worst month for a desert trip — a real conflict.

The Geminids in mid-December are arguably better from the Sahara: reliably rich, and December nights are clear and dry even if they are cold.

The Quadrantids in early January and the Lyrids in April are smaller but still productive under a genuinely dark sky.

A shower only performs if the moon cooperates, so check both. A rich shower under a full moon is a disappointment; a modest one under a new moon is spectacular.

Binoculars beat a telescope

A small pair of binoculars is the single best piece of astronomy equipment to bring to a desert camp. They weigh little, need no setup, and transform the experience.

Through them: Jupiter's four Galilean moons as points of light in a line, the craters along the terminator of a half moon, the Pleiades resolving from six stars into fifty, and the Orion nebula as a visible cloud.

A telescope, by contrast, is heavy, fiddly to set up in sand and in the dark, and shows a narrow field that is hard to navigate without practice. Leave it at home.

Making it the reason you go

If the sky is your priority rather than a bonus, three decisions change everything. Book around a new moon. Choose a camp deeper into the erg, away from the cluster near the road. And go in a clear, dry month rather than the humid end of summer.

Add a pair of binoculars and a phone tripod, both of which weigh almost nothing, and you have equipped yourself better than ninety percent of visitors.

Then protect the conditions on the night. Ask the group to use red light. Stay away from the fire. Let your eyes adapt for a full twenty minutes without checking a screen, which is harder than it sounds and is the single thing that separates a good sky from an extraordinary one.
