Windsurfing built Essaouira's reputation long before kiting arrived, and the town has been a fixture on the European windsurf circuit for decades. The wind that makes it difficult to surf there is precisely the point.
The summer thermal runs from spring into autumn, strong and dependable, across a wide sandy bay with schools, rental and repair all in one place. Conditions are choppy bump-and-jump rather than flat, which suits intermediates and above; Moulay Bouzerktoun, half an hour north, is the stronger wave-sailing spot and is for experienced sailors only.
Equipment is heavy and expensive to fly, so renting locally is the norm even for people who own kit. Check what the school stocks for your weight and level, and remember the wind here is genuinely strong — the sail size you use at home may not be the one you want in an Essaouira afternoon.
