A surf lesson in Morocco almost never happens where the photographs are taken. The points north of Taghazout are rock-bottomed and crowded; lessons run on the sand at Tamraght, Banana Beach, Crocodile Beach or Taghazout Plage, which is exactly as it should be.
A first lesson is roughly two hours and starts on the beach: how to lie on the board, where to put your feet, how to fall away from it rather than onto it. Most of the water time is spent in whitewater standing up on broken waves, which is the correct way to start and not a lesser version of surfing.
What separates a good school from a cheap one is the ratio, the state of the equipment, and whether the instructor moves the group when the tide turns. Ask how many people are in the water per instructor before you book — six is common, four is better, and above eight nobody is being watched properly.
